Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Shawn Anderson
A defenceman with good puck-handling skills, Anderson was recruited by coach Shawn Walsh for his University of Maine Black Bears for 1985-86 but halfway through the season Anderson left to join the Canadian National Team to play in the Spengler Cup over Christmas.

On the strength of that one productive season he was selected 5th overall at the 1986 draft, by Buffalo, lofty status indeed considering the team could have chosen Vincent Damphousse, Brian Leetch, or Adam Graves instead.

Anderson made the Buffalo Sabres as an 18-year-old the next fall under coach Scotty Bowman but during his entire eight years in the NHL he never played a full season. The Sabres gave up on him after four half years, sending him to Washington on September 30, 1990. The very next day, the Caps exposed him in the Waiver Draft, and he was claimed by Quebec. He was traded by Quebec to Winnipeg for Sergei Kharin on October 22, 1991, and the very next day was sent back to Washington for future considerations.

After a season in Germany, 1991-92, he finally played for the Capitals for much of two years, and after one game with the Flyers in 1994-95 his career was an atlas of the U.S. and Europe, ranging from the IHL in Utah to seasons in Germany and Austria.

Following his 1999-00 season with the IHL's Michigan K-Wings, Anderson decided to return overseas, where he now plays in Germany of the DEL.
