Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Derek Mayer
Defenseman Derek Mayer played 17 games with the Ottawa Senators in 1993-94. Although his NHL career was short he enjoyed success in college, internationally and as a minor leaguer.

Born in Rossland, BC, Mayer excelled in the BCJHL with the Penticton Knights. He then spent three years at the University of Denver and was chosen 43rd overall by the Detroit Red Wings after his freshman year in 1986. After spending the 1988-89 season with the Canadian national team, Mayer made his pro debut with the AHL's Adirondack Red Wings in 1989-90.

Mayer spent two more years bouncing around the minors before he decided to resume playing with Team Canada. He spent two years with the squad and played at the 1993 World Championships then won a silver medal at the Lillehammer Olympics the following year. Just after the Olympics, Mayer was signed as a free agent by the Ottawa Senators and played the last 17 games of the season. He later signed with the Berlin Polar Bears of Germany where he toiled until retiring in 2001.

The veteran backliner played the 1994-95 season with the Atlanta Knights before signing with Tappara Tampere of Finland. Mayer rejoined Team Canada after the 1995-96 Finnish season and helped his country win the silver medal. He the signed with the EHC Eisbaren Berlin and provided grit and offense on their blueline for two years.
