Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Brian Chapman
Selected as Hartford's third pick, 74th overall in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft, defenseman Brian Chapman had realized a life-long dream. Growing up in Brockville, Ontario, Chapman played in the town's minor hockey system until the age of 17. While playing Tier Two with the Brockville Braves, he was noticed by the Belleville Bulls of the OHL, where he would play for three seasons. In his rookie year with the Bulls, Chapman played in 66 games, scoring six goals and 37 points. He followed that up with a 37-point season in 1986-87 and finally a 68-point effort in 1987-88.

In 1988-89, Chapman turned pro, and dressed for 71 games with the AHL's Binghamton Whalers. He developed his skills for two years, before finally getting the chance to play in the NHL in 1990-91 with the Hartford Whalers. As it turns out the three games Chapman played that year were the only three of his NHL career. The next two years were spent in Springfield with the Indians of the AHL.

In 1993-94, Chapman decided it was time for a change of scenery, so he switched to the IHL, signing with the Phoenix Roadrunners. He remained in Arizona for four years before joining the Long Beach Ice Dogs for a brief 20-game stint. He was traded to the Manitoba Moose for Russ Romaniuk on October 16, 1997. After four years with the Moose in the IHL, Chapman followed the team as it moved into the AHL following the demise of the IHL after the 1999-00 season. He played over 600 games in the IHL and has surpassed 900 games playing as a professional. He continues to play for the Moose and is still regarded as the team's best defenseman.
