Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Mike Vellucci
Mike Vellucci was drafted by the Hartford Whalers in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft, but then missed all of the next season due to injury. After recovering and playing his final Junior campaign in 1985-86 the young defenseman was ready to begin his professional career. Vellucci turned pro in 1986 and spent that season toiling for the Salt Lake Golden Eagles of the International Hockey League. During his second pro season, which was split primarily between the Milwaukee Admirals of the IHL and the American Hockey League's Binghamton Whalers, Vellucci got the call up to the big leagues.

Hartford dressed Vellucci for two games, and though he didn't score any points for them he provided some toughness from the defense and racked up 11 penalty minutes.

The 1988-89 season was spent entirely in the minors and Vellucci's stock began to drop. The following year he was out of the Whaler's organization and spent the year packing and unpacking his suitcase. He spent time with two different East Coast League clubs as well as a short stopover in the IHL and a 5 game stint in Britain with the Whitley Warriors.

Vellucci left the game following his time in England, but he was back a year later signing on with the Michigan Falcons of the Colonial League. He again hung up his skates at year's end, but again a comeback was in the cards and he returned two years later to play his last seven games of his career, back in the Colonial League.
