Zdeno Ciger played his junior hockey in the former Czechoslovakia. In 1987-88, he made his debut at the Extraliga level by playing eight games, scoring seven points, as an 18-year-old with Dukla Trencín.

Cíger was drafted 54th overall in the 1988 Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils. In 1988-89, he potted 18 goals and 31 points in 43 games and won the league's Rookie of the Year award in Czechoslovakia. In 1989-90, he scored 17 goals and improved to 41 points. In 1990-91, he moved to North America and played eight games for the AHL's Utica Devils.

In 1990-91, he made his NHL debut and scored 25 points in 45 games. The following season, he was limited to just 20 games, but still scored 11 points. In 1992-93, Ciger was traded on January 13 with Kevin Todd to the Edmonton Oilers for Bernie Nicholls. In 64 games between the two teams, he scored 36 points. In 1993-94, he played all 84 games and scored 22 goals and 57 points. In the shortened 1994-95 season, Ciger played just five games. In 1995-96, he led the Oilers with 31 goals and won the club's Unsung Hero award.

In 1996, Ciger represented the Slovak Republic at both the World Championships and the World Cup of Hockey. The following year, he again played for his country at the World Championships. In February 1998, he played for the Slovak Republic at the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano.

On October 5, 1998, Ciger's rights were claimed in the Waiver Draft by the expansion Nashville Predators. Two years later, on September 29, 2000, he was selected in the Waiver Draft by the expansion Minnesota Wild. On July 17, 2001, he signed a free agent contract with the New York Rangers.
