Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Shawn Cronin
Shawn Cronin attended the University of Illinois for four years, earning a degree before even considering a career as a hockey pro. Cronin was not overly confident he could make the big leagues, so he chose to pursue his education. After his senior season with the University of Illinois, he was encouraged to see if he could latch on with a professional hockey team. Although he did not possess a lot of offensive ability, he was a big, strong stay-at-home defender who was not shy about removing intruders who dared enter his team's crease.

In 1986-87, Cronin's professional hockey career got its start at the age of 23 in Salt Lake, Utah where he appeared in 53 games for the Golden Eagles of the IHL and had the best offensive production of his life, scoring eight goals and 24 points. During the next ten years, Cronin scored a total of just nine goals.

In 1988-89, Cronin played in his first NHL game as a member of the Washington Capitals. As a free agent, he signed with the Winnipeg Jets for the 1989-90 season, dressing for 61 games. While he did not record a goal, he kept the peace for some of the Jets smaller players and spent 243 minutes in the penalty box. Cronin played two more seasons in Winnipeg, picking up just one goal while accumulating 360 minutes in penalties. In some NHL arenas he was nicknamed "Cronin the Barbarian."

Cronin had a 34-game stopover with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1992-93 before playing two seasons with the San Jose Sharks until the end of the 1994-95 campaign. Cronin played two more years of pro hockey with the Fort Wayne Komets of the IHL before retiring in 1997.
