Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Joe Dziedzic
Left winger Joe Dziedzic was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on December 18, 1971 and went on to play for his home state's University of Minnesota for four seasons. The NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins drafted Dziedzic in the third round of the 1990 Entry Draft on the strength of his solid senior year at Edison High School, where he notched 29 goals and 48 points in just 17 games. After Dziedzic completed his final season of his college career, he joined the Penguins farm team the Cleveland Lumberjacks where he played 68 games scoring 15 goals and 15 assists in 1994-95.

The following year, Dziedzic took his act to Pittsburgh, playing 69 games in his NHL rookie season and notching five goals and five assists. In 1996-97, Dziedzic elevated his game, securing more ice time as a regular on the Penguins checking line, where his strapping size was an asset, and improved his offensive totals to nine goals and nine assists in 59 games.

What was to be his third season with the Penguins started with a one day holdout, and then a disappointing training camp under new Penguin coach Kevin Constantine that resulted in Dziedzic being sent to the minors on the eve of the season.

Dziedzic spent that entire year with the Lumberjacks, but he elevated his game, scoring 21 goals and 41 points. Though he was no longer in the Penguins plans, Dziedzic was offered a contract by the Phoenix Coyotes that summer.

he resurfaced in the NHL for just two games with the Coyotes in 1998-99, spending the rest of his year with the Springfield Falcons of the AHL. Unfortunately, an eye injury suffered late that season would keep Dziedzic from continuing his professional hockey career.
