Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Ilja Byakin
Ilja Byakin was selected in the eleventh round, 267th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft.

The year he was drafted, Byakin played in the German Elite League for Landshut EV, where he scored 12 goals and 31 points in 44 games. In coming to North America, Byakin was not deemed ready to step in with the Oilers at the NHL level, so he was sent to the team's farm club in Cape Breton of the AHL. However, he played well during his 12 games in the minors and was called up to play in 44 games with Edmonton that year. His eight goals and 28 points were somewhat of a pleasant surprise for the Oilers, who had not expected quite so much offensive production out of their first-year player.

In 1994-95, Byakin joined the San Jose Sharks, but due to several injuries, he was limited to just 13 NHL games. He had also fallen out of favor with some of the team's officials, and that spelled the end of his tenure in northern California. Although Byakin had enjoyed a certain degree of on-ice success in the NHL, he never felt comfortable with the North American game, or the lifestyle.

The next two years of Byakin's career were spent in Sweden, where he played for Malmo, putting together two back-to-back 25-point campaigns. In 1997-98, he decided to return to North America, playing for the San Antonio Dragons of the IHL. In six contests he picked up one assist. The following season he appeared in 52 games with the IHL's Las Vegas Thunder, scoring three goals and ten points.

Byakin was last known to have played at the professional level in Russia in 1999-00 with Lada Togliatti where he had nine goals and 22 points in 37 games.
