Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Matt Johnson
An imposing left-winger at 6'5", Matt Johnson had many scouts drooling at his potential in the early 1990s. When he reached the NHL, he was slotted as a power forward and enforcer who could only reach a certain point on a team's depth chart.

Born in Welland, Ontario, Johnson racked up 444 penalty minutes in his first two junior seasons with the OHL's Peterborough Petes. The Los Angeles Kings were intrigued and selected him 33rd overall in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft.

Johnson debuted in L.A. once the 1994-95 owners' lockout was over and made his presence felt with 102 penalty minutes in only 14 games. Johnson spent most of the next year with the IHL's Phoenix Roadrunners before returning to the Kings for full time duty in 1996-97. In 1999 he joined the expansion Atlanta Thrashers after being claimed in the 1999 Expansion Draft and went on to play one season with the club before having his rights dealt to the Minnesota Wild in the summer of 2000.

Upon his arrival with the Wild, Johnson continued to be an one-ice presence and during the 2002-03 season was a key player in the club's run to the Western Conference Final.
