Dimitri Kvartalnov was a talented left-winger who played a little more than a season with the Boston Bruins in the early 1990s. Apart from the NHL, he was a top scorer in Europe in the former Soviet Union, Switzerland, and Austria.

Kvartlanov played with SKA Kalinen, a second division Soviet club, for two years before spending a decade with Khimik. He played with the latter club in the Friendship Tour of 1989-90 as well as the Super Series that year and in 1990-91. Kvartalnov won the Izvestia trophy as USSR's top scorer in 1990 after recording 54 points in 46 games for Khimik.

The creative winger played for USSR national team when they won consecutive gold medals at the 1989 and 1990 World Championships. He came to North America in 1991 without an NHL contract and led the IHL with 60 goals and 118 points while playing for the San Diego Gulls. He was named to the league's first all-star team and was presented the Garry F. Longman Memorial Trophy as the IHL's top rookie. He also won the James Gatschene Memorial Trophy as the league MVP and Leo P. Lamoureaux Trophy for leading the "I" in scoring.

Kvartlanov was chosen 16th overall in 1992 by the Bruins then scored 30 goals for them as a rookie in 1992-93. He split the 1993-94 season between Bruins and their AHL affiliate in Providence. In 1994-95 he played the first of three seasons with Ambri-Piotta club in of Switzerland. He also suited up for Russia when it finished fourth at the 1996 World Championships. Kvartlanov played 12 games in 1996-97 with the Austrian club Klagenfurter before retiring.
