Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Jason McBain
Defenseman Jason McBain was selected in the fourth round, 81st overall in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft by the Hartford Whalers while playing with the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League.

McBain, who has always been blessed with an abundance of size, made the direct jump from bantam at the age of 15 right to major junior when he earned a roster spot with the Lethbridge Broncos in 1990-91. He was a strong defensive defenseman, known for playing it safe and rarely getting caught out of position. Early in his second season with Lethbridge he was traded to the Portland Winter Hawks where he played out his junior eligibility over the next two-and-a-half seasons. He also represented the United States at the 1994 World Junior Championships.

Upon turning pro in 1994-95 the Whalers assigned him to their minor-league affiliate in Springfield of the American League. He obtained additional international experience, representing the U.S. at the 1995 World Championships. In 1995-96 he was back on the defense for Springfield but was called up for three games with Hartford that year. It was much the same the following season but McBain was used by the Whalers for six games. In his nine games in the NHL McBain failed to record a point.

In the summer of 1999 McBain signed as a free agent with the Montreal Canadiens but it has not transpired into any further playing time in the NHL. He has played the past two years in the German Elite League.
