Russian defenseman Andrei Skopintsev was born in Moscow on September 28th, 1971 and spent six seasons with the Soviet Wings then had stops in Germany and Finland before he was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. Skopintsev's first season in North America was split between the NHL and the minor leagues.

Skopintsev played 19 games at each level. In the NHL, Skopintsev scored a goal and an assist with the Lightning while in the minors he managed five points. The following year Skopintsev played four more games with Tampa while the rest of the year he played with the IHL's Detroit Vipers. When his contract with the Lightning expired in the summer of 2000, he signed with the Atlanta Thrashers.

Skopintsev suited up for 17 games with the Thrashers and managed a goal and four points. He also spent 25 games back in the IHL with the Orlando Solar Bears. In 2001-02, Skopintsev opted to return to Europe and continue his career in the Russian Elite League.

On the international stage, Skopintsev has represented his homeland at five World Championships (1995-1998 and 2004).
