Mike McKee played four years of NCAA hockey with the University of Princeton Tigers from 1988 to 1992 and was named to the ECAC Second All-Star Team in 1990 when he scored 25 points in 26 games as a junior.

In 1992-93, McKee signed a free-agent contract with the Halifax Citadels of the AHL. A scout with the Quebec Nordiques noticed him and he was offered a tryout with the Nords the following year. He wound up playing in 48 games with Quebec in 1993-94, scoring three goals and 15 points.

McKee retired as a member of the AHL's Cornwall Aces after the 1994-95 season.
