Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Johnathan Aitken
Defenseman Johnathan Aitken was selected by the Boston Bruins with the eighth overall selection in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. The Bruins had high hopes for the big, rangy blueliner, but he failed to meet their expectations. After being drafted, he spent two more seasons in the Western Hockey League playing Junior was named the WHL East Second All-Star Team in his final campaign before turning pro for the 1998-99 season.

Aitken's first season in the Bruins organization was spent with their American Hockey League farm club in Providence. In 65 games Aitken posted 11 points and accumulated 92 penalty minutes. The following year he upped his totals to 70 games and 14 points but that season was highlighted by his brief call up to Boston.

With the Bruins, Aitken suited up for three games but was unable to register a point during his short time in Boston. The Boston brass were not impressed with the development of their young defenseman and Aitken was released at season's end.

Aitken then continued his career in the Czech Republic by signing on with Sparta Praha for the 2000-01 campaign. After one year in Europe, Aitken returned to North America but found few opportunities. He eventually signed on with the East Coast Hockey League's Jackson Bandits and then worked his way back up to the American Hockey League. The Norfolk Admirals brought Aitken aboard in 2001-02 and he went on to play parts of three seasons with the club while seeing his first NHL action since the 1999-00 season with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2003-04.

After stints with the Bruins and Blackhawks organization, Aitken was acquired by the Vancouver Canucks in the summer of 2004 and went on to play the 2004-05 season with the club's AHL affiliate in Manitoba. In the summer of 2005 Aitken was acquired by the Montreal Canadiens.
