Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- John Namestnikov
Defenceman Yevgeny "John" Namestnikov played parts of five seasons with the Vancouver Canucks and New York Islanders in the 1990s. Blessed with good mobility and passing skills, he registered plenty of assists in the USSR and the minors but was unable to keep a permanent place in the NHL.

Born in Arzamis-lg, USSR, Namestnikov first played domestically with Torpedo Gorky. He played seven games for the USSR when it won the silver medal at the 1990 World Junior Championships. He then played a year with Torpedo Niz in 1990-91 before he was selected 117th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL Entry Draft. Prior to the 1991-92 season he was recruited to suit up for the prestigious Central Red Army club of Moscow and was a rugged force on their blueline for two years.

Namestnikov played 17 games for Vancouver in 1993-94 and 16 matches in the lockout-shortened season. During this time he saw plenty of action with the Hamilton Canucks and Syracuse Crunch of the AHL. Over the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons he was a fine playmaking defenceman for the Crunch but was rarely called upon by Vancouver. On July 21, 1997, the young rearguard signed with the New York Islanders but was basically a farm hand until the end of the 1998-99 season.
