Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Shawn Byram
Shawn Byram was selected by the New York Islanders in the fourth round of the 1986 NHL Entry Draft, 80th overall. Byram played his major junior hockey in the WHL with the Regina Pats and the Prince Albert Raiders. NHL scouts were impressed by his physical presence on the ice and his strong defensive abilities. In his final year of junior, he scored 23 goals and 51 points in 61 games with the Raiders.

Byram turned pro in 1988-89, playing one game with the Indianapolis Ice of the IHL before moving to the AHL where he suited up for 45 games with the Springfield Indians. After another year in Springfield, and an eight-game stopover with Johnstown of the ECHL, Byram joined the AHL's Capital District Islanders, a farm team of the New York Islanders, who had acquired Byram's rights. Byram was called up to play four games with New York in 1990-91 and although he was held pointless, he did spent 14 minutes in the penalty box.

Byram played one more NHL game the following year with the Chicago Blackhawks while the balance of his next three seasons were spent back in the IHL with Indianapolis.

In 1994, Byram made the decision to play pro hockey in the British Elite League, joining the Bracknell Bees. He also played in Manchester and has played the past five years with the Ayr Scottish Eagles. By far his most memorable offensive season came back in 1995-96, when he scored 70 goals, 120 assists and 190 points while playing with the Manchester Storm. That output tripled his second-best scoring season as a pro, when he notched 63 points with Capital District in 1990-91. In fact, his second-best season for goals in Britain was just 24, so the 70-goal season came as a big surprise to everyone.

Critics of Byram say he has a tendency to float through many games, and does not show his best playmaking skills until roused into action. When he is playing at top of his game, the consensus in the British sports media seems to be that he can be one of the best players in the league, but the knock seems to be that it happens too infrequently.

As of 2001-02, Byram continues to play in Ayr.
