Born in Eganville, Ontario, Heins played junior hockey with the OHL's Peterborough Petes and Windsor Spitfires. He then spent two years with the Renfrew Timber Wolves of the EOJBHL before initiating his pro career with the ECHL's Mobile Mysticks. He started the 1996-97 seasons with Mobile then joined the IHL's Kansas City Blades after coming to terms with the San Jose Sharks in between his signing with the Sharks, Heins played one game with the AHL's Cape-Breton Oilers.

During his first two years in the Sharks' organization, Heins played mostly in the AHL while spending some time with Canada's National Team in 1998-99. He made the club out of training camp in 2000-01 then added grit to the blueline in 38 games. Heins who has one of the hardest shots in hockey, spent the better part of six seasons with the Sharks organization before he was dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins at the 2003 NHL trading deadline.

The Eganville, Ontario native saw action in 27 games with Pittsburgh before being claimed by the Atlanta Thrashers in the summer of 2003. Upon his arrival with the Thrashers, Heins went on to play the majority of the season with the club's AHL affiliate in Chicago while seeing limited action with the parent club.
