Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Kent Paynter
While skating for the Summerside Capitals of the PEI Junior League in 1981-82, Kent Paynter showed enough potential to warrant proper Junior A treatment. To ensure his development, he was shipped west to join the Kitchener Rangers of the OHA where he played three solid seasons as a rearguard with an offensive touch.

After his first campaign in Kitchener, the rearguard was picked up by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1983 Entry Draft. He remained with the Rangers and the OHA, however, until 1985.

Afterwards, he turned pro in the AHL with the Nova Scotia Oilers. There, he put in two seasons to test the waters of minor pro. What soon became evident was that Paynter was, for the most part, strong minor pro material but not suited to the higher skill level of the NHL.

In each of the seven years that followed, the hard-working winger earned brief appearances at the NHL as a stopgap before retreating to his familiar home in the minors. During that time, he saw action with the Blackhawks, Capitals, Jets, and Senators. The rest of Paynter's career was devoted to such minor-league clubs as the Saginaw Hawks, Baltimore Skipjacks, Moncton Hawks, New Haven Nighthawks, and PEI Senators.

In 1994-95, he left the NHL for good to play for the Milwaukee Admirals of the IHL. He remained with the club until the tail end of the 1997-98 campaign and then jumped to the Indianapolis Ice where he rounded out his career at the end of the season.
