Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Tom Pederson
Tom Pederson had all of the hockey encouragement he needed while growing up in the youth hockey haven of Minnesota. At the close of his first season at the University of Minnesota, he'd already been selected by the local Minnesota North Stars in the 1989 Entry Draft.

Pederson, however, elected to stay the course at school until the end of the 1990-91 campaign. He then skated for the U.S. National Team for the bulk of the season that followed. At about the same time, the NHL held a dispersal draft with Pederson's rights being picked up by the San Jose Sharks.

The small but swift rearguard turned pro in 1992 with the Sharks' farm club, the Kansas City Blades, of the IHL. During the following season, he split his time between the Shark Tank and the Blades. By 1993-94, however, he finally caught on more or less full time with the Sharks.

During his three seasons in San Jose, he played reasonably well for a team that, at times, struggled defensively. By 1995-96, however, his overall performance began to slip. Rather than wait for a pink slip to the minors, Pederson signed with Seibu Tetsudo Tokyo in Japan. He played one season in the Orient and then returned to North America to sign as a free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs. His comeback effort, though, was short lived. He lasted only 15 games in Toronto before being bounced to the minors where he put in stints with the St. John's Maple Leafs, Utah Grizzlies, and Fort Wayne Komets.

In 1998, Pederson elected to reenter the international circuit by signing with the Hannover Scorpions of the German League. He remained there until his retirement in 2000.
