Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Ricard Persson
By the time Ricard Persson finally came to North America to try his hand at pro hockey, he was already a 26-year-old veteran of the Swedish Elite League where he'd been a defensive mainstay for Leksands and Malmo.

Long before he made the trip across the Atlantic, the New Jersey Devils had drafted Persson in 1987. When he finally followed through on the Devils' desire in 1995, he was assigned to their AHL affiliate the Albany River Rats. During his first two seasons with the organization, he appeared in only 13 games with the Devils. In essence, he was unable to crack the club's solid defensive corps.

In 1996, he was traded to the St. Louis Blues where he continued his trend of bouncing between the AHL and the NHL as an annual rite. While on top, however, when not under the influence to the injury bug, he managed to establish himself as a solid sixth or seventh defender. He played an intelligent game from the back end, clearing the front of his net with a respectable degree of toughness and grit. He also got full marks for his willingness to make the safe play to get the puck out of danger. On offense, however, Persson was rarely ever a threat to score more than the odd point on a good night.

In 2000-01, he hooked up with the Ottawa Senators where he presently plays. His first campaign was shortened as a result of an ankle injury. But when healthy, he has had a stabilizing influence on the Sens' blueline.
