Dan Plante was born October 5, 1971 in Hayward, Wisconsin. The 3rd choice, 48th overall selection of the New York Islanders in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Plante is a graduate of Edina High School in Wisconsin and joined the University of Wisconsin in 1990-91 where he spent three years as a Badger studying Business.

In his three years at the University of Wisconsin the Hayward, Wisconsin native finished sixth in WCHA scoring in his junior year and ranks fifth on the Badgers' all-time list in penalty minutes (309). A WCHA All-Tournament selection in 1991-92 as Wisconsin finished third, while advancing to the NCAA final that year losing to Lake Superior State.

In 1993-94, Plante spent the majority of the season with the International Hockey League's Salt Lake Golden Eagles before making his NHL debut in January of 1994. Plante played in 12 regular season and one playoff game, scoring his first NHL goal in the Eastern Conference quarter-finals versus the New York Rangers.

Plante played in only two games during the 1994-95 season, both with the Islanders' IHL affiliate in Denver. During training camp scrimmage with the Islanders, Plante tore his anterior cruciate ligament and missed the remainder of the 1994-95 season after suffering a set back during a game with the Grizzlies.

In 1995-96 Plante returned to Islanders line-up playing in 73 games, while competing for the United States at the 1996 World Championships in Vienna. After a career high in games played in 1995-96, Plante played in 67 games the following year and returned to the to the World Championships as a member of the United States.

Plante spent the majority of the 1997-98 season with the IHL's Utah Grizzlies while playing in only seven games with the Islanders before joining the IHL's Chicago Wolves in 1998-99 where he has spent the past four seasons capturing the 2000 Turner Cup.
