Stephane Richer was born April 28, 1966 in Hull, Quebec. A graduate of the QMJHL's Hull Olympiques, Richer was an offensively gifted defenceman who played four seasons in his hometown before signing as a free agent with the AHL's Baltimore Skipjacks in the summer of 1987.

Richer played 22 games with the Skipjacks before signing as a free agent with the Montreal Canadiens. Upon joining the Canadiens organization, Richer was assigned to the team's AHL affiliate in Sherbrooke. Richer went on to play three seasons in Sherbrooke before signing as a free agent with the Los Angeles Kings in the summer of 1990. After one season with the Kings organizatoin, the Hull native re-signed with the Montreal Canadiens prior to the 1991-92 season and spent the season with the AHL's Fredericton Canadiens where he notched a career high in goals (17) while finishing the season with 64 points and being named to the AHL's Second All-Star team.

In the summer of 1992 Richer was joining his third NHL organization, signing as a free agent with the Expansion Tampa Bay Lightning. Richer joined the team's IHL affiliate in Atlanta for a mere three games, yet managed to play his first three NHL games before being traded to the Boston Bruins. Upon his arrival in Beantown, the steady well-travelled rearguard split the remainder of the season with the Bruins and their AHL affiliate in Providence.

Following a year that saw him suit up for four seperate teams, the Florida Panthers acquired the veteran defenceman in the 1993 Exapansion Draft. Richer went on to play two seasons in the Panthers organization, splitting his time between Florida and the IHL's Cincinnati Cyclones. In his two years in the "I", Richer was twice named an IHL Second Team All-Star (1994, 1995) before deciding a change of scenerey would be for the best.

After eight seasons and eleven teams, Richer brought his game overseas to Germany and the Manheim Eagles. Richer went on to play seven years in Manheim before joining the Frankfurt Lions in 2002-03.
