Josef Boumedienne was born January 12, 1978 in Stockholm, Sweden. The 7th choice, 91st overall selection of the New Jersey Devils in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, Boumedienne played in Sweden for the early part of his career before joining Tappara Tampere of the Finnish Elite League in 1998-99.

The defenseman from Stockholm, Sweden spent two seasons with Tappara notching a career high 32 points (8-24-32) in 50 games during the 1999-2000 season.

On the international stage, Boumedienne represented Sweden at the 1997 and 1998 World Junior Championships and went on to make his North American debut in 2000-01 with the Devils AHL affiliate in Albany. In his first season of professional hockey in North America, Boumedienne finished second amongst Albany defensemen in scoring with 37 points (8-29-37) in 79 games while representing the River Rats at the 2001 AHL All-Star Game.

Boumedienne split the early part of the 2001-02 season with New Jersey and Albany before being dealt to the Tampa Bay Lightning in an early season trade. Following the trade, Boumedienne went on to spend the majority of the remainder of the season with the Lightning's AHL affiliate in Springfield while playing in three games with the parent club.

Boumedienne traveled extensively during the 2002-03 season, beginning with stints in the AHL with the Binghamton Senators and Portland Pirates, and ending with a spot on the Washington Capitals blue-line.
