Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Tim Watters
For a 6th-round draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets in 1979, Tim Watters exceeded all scouting expectations, and likely those of his own as well. His NHL career began in 1981 after he had spent two seasons in the NCAA with Michigan Tech.

Watters was a mainstay on the Jets' defense for more than six seasons and had at least 20 points four years in a row. In 1987-88, he appeared in ten games for the Canadian National team. The final six years of his NHL career were spent in Los Angeles with the Kings. He appeared in 22 playoff games for the Kings in 1993, the year the lost in the Stanley Cup finals to the Montreal Canadiens in five games.

In a 741-game career, Watters finished with 26 goals, 151 assists 177 points and 1,289 penalty minutes.

Watters was the head coach of his alma mater, the Michigan Tech Huskies from 1996 until 2000, compiling a rather dismal 39-116-9 record. In 1999-2000 the team set a dubious record, going 4-34, setting an NCAA season record for losses. He had played three years (1977-79, 80-81) as a member of the Michigan Tech hockey team and accumulated 93 points on 19 goals and 74 assists in 111 games played. He earned First Team All-America and All-WCHA honours in 1980-81 in helping the Huskies to a third-place NCAA finish. Watters was also a member of the NCAA All-Tournament Team that season.
