David Wilkie was drafted 20th overall in the 1992 Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. He made his NHL debut in the shortened 1994-95 season after toiling in the minors for the Fredericton Canadiens for a full year. The following season, he played 24 games at the NHL level and scored six points. In 1996-97, David joined the Canadiens full time and scored 15 points in 61 games.

In 1997-98, Wilkie was traded along with Stephane Richer and Darcy Tucker to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Patrick Poulin, Mick Vukota, and Igor Ulanov. He scored seven points in 34 games between the two teams. In 1998-99, David scored eight points in 46 games for the Lightning.

On September 29, 1999, Wilkie signed as a free agent with the New York Rangers. In 2000-01, he played one game at the NHL level.

His junior hockey was played with the Omaha Lancer in 1990-91, and from there he moved on to play major Junior A with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League. In 1991-92, he joined the WHL ranks full time with the Kamloops Blazers and scored 40 points. The following season, he scored 37 points. In 1993-94, David split the year between the Blazers and the Regina Pats and scored 77 points in 56 games.

Wilkie represented the United States at the 1993 and 1994 World Junior Championships.
