Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Rick Berry
On November 14, 1978, Rick Berry was born in Birtle, Manitoba. After going through the Brandon Minor Hockey Association, Berry joined the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League, helping his team win the Western Conference championship. In 1997-98, the defenseman split the season between Seattle and Spokane.

Berry was the third pick of the Colorado Avalanche in 1997's Entry Draft and spent the better part of the next three seasons in Hershey developing with the AHL Bears. He made his NHL debut January 7, 2001 in a game against the Detroit Red Wings. Then, on March 19, 2002, Berry and Ville Nieminen were sent to Pittsburgh in exchange for Darius Kasparaitis, and he finished the season with the Penguins.

In October of 2002, the Washington Capitals claimed Berry in the Waiver Draft and over the course of the next two seasons was a mainstay on the Caps blue line, while seeing limited action with the club's AHL affiliate in Portland. Following his two-year stint with the Caps, Berry signed as a free agent with the Phoenix Coyotes in the summer of 2004. Despite his new surroundings, Berry continued to toil in the AHL and after only a little over one season with the Coyotes organization was dealt to the Nashville Predators.

On July 20, 2006 Berry was signed as a free agent by the New York Islanders.
