Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Vern Ayres
A giant of a defenceman for his time, Ayres played for four teams over six seasons, never in the playoffs, before going down to the AHL for a career in the minors. He made his reputation as a tough man, but that was never reason enough for any NHL team to hang on to him.

He began by playing hockey in various Toronto leagues and joined the New York Americans in 1930 where he played most of the next three seasons during which time the Amerks didn't qualify for the playoffs at all.

He was sold to the Maroons in the summer of 1933 but played only part of the year with the team and was traded, again, to the new St. Louis Eagles prior to their one and only season in the NHL. After the Eagles folded, Ayres was on the move again, to the Rangers, where he played half the 1935-36 season, his last NHL games.

After that, Ayres played in the minors for half a dozen seasons before retiring in 1942.
