Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- John Bednarski
Defenseman John Bednarski was born in 1952 on July 4 in Thunder Bay. The Ontario native made his junior hockey debut in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, playing for the West Kildonan North Stars in 1970-71. At the end of that season, he made the jump to the Winnipeg Jets of the Western Canadian Junior Hockey League.

Bednarksi spent the next season with the Jets, then signed as a free agent with the New York Rangers. Two years of apprenticing in the American Hockey League led to his NHL debut with Rangers, where he played 99 games between 1974 and 1977 and scored two goals and 20 points. After playing just five NHL games in '76-'77, Bednarski spent the next two seasons in the minors before signing with the Edmonton Oilers for their first season in the National Hockey League.

Bednarksi played just one game with the Oilers, splitting the rest of his season between the AHL's Adirondack Red Wings and the CHL's Cincinnati Stingers. Bednarski inked his last NHL contract on June 26th, 1980 when he signed on with the Buffalo Sabres, but his final two seasons of professional hockey were spent exclusively in the American Hockey League, including one with the Rochester Americans, where Bednarksi would later return as the team's radio and TV analyst.
