Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Dick Behling
Richard 'Dick' Behling was born in Kitchener, Ontario on March 16th, 1916. Behling, a versatile player who was proficient at both right wing and defence, took a long, interesting road to the NHL.

Behling began his career with his hometown Kitchener Greenshirts in 1934-35. After two seasons with the Greenshirts, he joined the Baltimore Orioles of the Eastern Hockey League for two seasons. Behling then went to Europe to play a season in Britain with the Harringay Greyhounds before joining yet another league, the Michigan-Ontario Hockey League, with the Detroit Holtzbaugh.

Playing in Detroit caught the attention of the Red Wings, who signed Behling on October 16th, 1940. He played five games with the Red Wings over the next three seasons, but the bulk of his time was spent with the Indianapolis Capitals of the American Hockey League. Behling's Capitals captured the Calder Cup Championship in 1942 when they defeated the Hershey Bears.

Military service kept Behling out of hockey between 1943-45, but he resumed his career upon his release with one more season in Indianapolis and a year with the Hamilton Pats of the Ontario Hockey Association. After his first year in the OHA Sr. league with the Pats, Behling was able to return home when he joined the Kitchener Dutchmen, for whom he played his final four seasons before retiring in 1950-51.
