Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Bill Bennett
Hulking left winger Bill Bennett was born on May 31, 1953 in Warwick, Rhode Island. Bennett comes from one the top hockey families in the United States. His father, Harvey, was an NHL goaltender with the Boston Bruins, and all five of his sons went on to play professional hockey themselves. Bill Bennett played a season with the Central Wisconsin Flyers of the USHL before signing a free agent contract with the NHL's Boston Bruins. The B's assigned him to the Columbus Owls of the International Hockey League for the 1976-77 season. After scoring 27 goals and 57 points that year, Bennett jumped to the AHL and the Rochester Americans for their playoff run at the tail end of the '77 season.

Bennett spent the entire '77-'78 season with the Amerks and caught the attention of the Bruins who gave him his shot during the 1978-79 campaign, suiting him up for seven games. Bennett scored a goal and added four assists in his stint. Back in the minors with the Americans, he continued to score, ending the year with 33 goals and 71 points in 72 games in the AHL.

After his most successful professional career to date, Bennett was given a solid opportunity to advance to the next level when the Hartford Whalers, who joined the NHL that summer as the result of the World Hockey Association's merger with the NHL, selected Bennett in the Expansion Draft of 1979. With the Whalers, Bennett played a career-high 24 games and scored three goals and three assists.

Though he never returned to the NHL following his year with the Whale, Bennett played two more years of pro hockey, one with the Wichita Wind of the CHL and then a final year split between the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League and the Fort Wayne Comets of the International Hockey League.
