Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Larry Bignell
Larry Bignell played one season of major junior hockey with the Edmonton Oil Kings in 1969-70 before turning pro. In 1970-71 he played with the Amarillo Wranglers of the CHL where he was the team's premier defensive defenseman. He then moved up to the AHL, playing two years with the Hershey Bears where once again his primary role was to prevent the opposition from scoring. By his own admission, Bignell was not an overly gifted offensive player, so he focused on taking care of business in his own zone.

Bignell was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft and he finally got the call to play with them in 1973-74, suiting up for 20 games, notching three assists. His only other NHL experience came with the Penguins when he played three playoff games.

Bignell retired as a member of the Hershey Bears following the 1976-77 season.
