Fred Brown was a speedy left winger with the OHA's Brockville Indians in 1923-24 and was selected to play in the Senior league with the Hamilton Rowing Club the following year. In just eight games with Hamilton, he scored ten goals and 13 points. In 1926-27, Brown joined the Windsor Hornets where he scored 15 goals and 19 points in 20 games. The following year he had 12 points in 29 games. In 1927-28, Brown played his entire nine-game NHL career as a member of the Montreal Maroons where he scored one goal. He played another 18 games in the CPHL with the Stratford Nationals. Other well known players on the Maroons that year included scoring star Nels Stewart, the tough Babe Siebert, Hap Emms and goalie Clint Benedict.

Brown played three more years of pro hockey. In 1928-29, he dressed for the Kitchener Flying Dutchmen, scoring 21 points in 40 games. The following year he joined the Niagara Falls Cataracts of the IHL, scoring two goals in 16 games before being sent to the Windsor Bulldogs where he had another three goals and six points in 24 games. His final year in 1930-31, was with the Syracuse Stars, scoring 15 goals and 22 points in 48 games.
