Jeff Brownschidle decided to follow in his older brother Jack's footsteps by enrolling at the University of Notre Dame in the fall of 1979. In his rookie season, he played in 39 games, scoring 14 goals and 51 points. The following year he played in a more defensive-oriented system and scored just four goals but still managed to accumulate 32 points.

At 21, Brownschidle turned pro, joining the Binghamton Whalers of the AHL. He played in 52 games, scoring four goals and 27 points. The highlight of his season was being called up to play three games with the Hartford Whalers in the NHL, where he made it to the official scoresheet, picking up an assist.

In 1982-83, Brownschidle played 64 games in Binghamton, turning in a solid offensive performance, scoring nine goals and 27 points. He was again called up to Hartford, this time for four games. Brownschidle played a total of seven NHL games, picking up one point. He continued to play pro hockey with Salt Lake of the CHL and Binghamton, retiring after the 1983-84 season.
