Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Gary Burns
Gary Burns was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in round 12 of the NHL Amateur Draft, 191st overall in 1975. Not many 12th rounders wind up playing a lot of games in the NHL, and Burns was no exception.

In 1974, he enrolled at the University of New Hampshire. In his rookie campaign, he showed signs of offensive prowess, scoring 17 goals and 32 points in 31 games. Unfortunately for Burns, his freshman year turned out to be his most impressive. Although he put up decent numbers in his last three years in the NCAA, his offensive numbers did not improve, and in fact declined.

In 1978-79, Burns signed with the Rochester Americans with the hopes of being noticed by the Leafs or any other NHL team for that matter. In 79 games with the Americans, he scored 16 goals and 46 points. By 1981, he was playing with the New Haven Nighthawks. In 69 games, Burnett scored 25 goals and 54 points. The NHL's New York Rangers noticed his strong play in the AHL, and called him up as a fill-in for eleven games in 1980-81, where he managed to score two goals and two assists.

That was it for Burns and his playing days in the NHL, but he continued to play hockey for another five years in the CHL, AHL and IHL. He finished with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles of the IHL, scoring 23 goals and 58 points in 78 games in 1985-86.
