The Washington Capitals in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft selected Tim Coulis in the first round, 18th overall. Coulis played three years of Junior A hockey in the OHA with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and the St. Catharines and Hamilton Fincups. During his final year of junior in 1977-78, Coulis played 46 games with Hamilton, scoring 27 goals and 52 points.

Coulis got his first opportunity to play in the NHL in the 1979-80 season when he dressed for 19 games with the Capitals, scoring once and assisting on two others. He was relegated to two years in the minors with the Dallas Blackhawks before taking a one year sabbatical from hockey in 1982-83.

Upon coming back to competitive hockey in 1983-84, Coulis returned to the CHL as a member of the Salt Lake Golden Eagles. He was called up to play two games in the NHL with the Minnesota North Stars. The following year he played seven games, and scored his first goal with the Stars and just the second of his NHL career. In 1985-86, Coulis played in 19 games with the North Stars, scoring two goals and two assists to finish his career with four goals and nine points in 47 games.

Missed entire 1978-79 due to broken wrist, September, 1978. Traded to Toronto by Washington with Robert Picard and Washington's 2nd round pick (Bob McGill) in 1980 NHL Draft for Mike Palmateer and Toronto's 3rd round pick (Torrie Robertson) in 1980 NHL Draft, June 11, 1980. Signed as a free agent by Vancouver, October 13, 1981.
Suspended for entire 1982-83 season for attack on referee Bob Hall, April 24, 1982. Signed as a free agent by Minnesota, July 2, 1983.
