Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Jari Gronstrand
Defenceman Jari Gronstrand was a solid player on four different clubs in the 80s and 90s. He used his mobility to stay in good position and made crisp passes to his forwards.

Born in Tampere, Finland, Gronstrand was taken 96th overall by the Minnesota North Stars in 1986 after four years with the powerful Tappara club. During this time, the young defender was a solid contributor to two Finnish Elite league titles. After helping his country place fourth at the 1986 World Championships, Gronstrand prepared for his first NHL training camp.

The talented blueliner looked steady in 47 games as an NHL rookie with Minnesota in 1986-87. A few months later he participated in the Canada Cup then joined the New York Rangers in a trade. Gronstrand provided mobility and power play support in 62 games with the Blueshirts before he was traded to the Quebec Nordiques as parts of the package for defenceman Normand Rochefort.

Gronstrand was used sporadically by the disorganized Nords and was eventually placed on waivers. He was claimed by the New York Islanders and contributed to their brief resurgence in 1989-90 before spending most of the next year in the minors. The veteran rearguard returned to Tampere in 1991-92 and played three years with the club before joining Saxonia of Germany for one last pro season in 1994-95.
