Jim Haggarty began his professional hockey career in 1932 with the Port Arthur Ports. In a career that lasted nearly twenty years, Haggarty played for the Memorial Cup twice and the Allan Cup four times. He represented Canada in the 1936 Olympics, winning a si;lver medal with the Port Arthur Bear Cats.

Signed as a free agent by the Canadiens in March 1942, Haggarty played the balance of the season. He logged ice team in three playoff games, making his last appearance in a Montreal sweater when the Canadiens were eliminated by Detroit in the first round. He played the balance of his career in the Quebec Senior League, mostly for the Montreal Royals. He retired after the 1949-1950 season.
