Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Al Hangsleben
|
Montreal drafted Alan Hangsleban in 1973, but he never played in a Candiens sweater. After studying for an engineering degree at the University of North Dakota, where he played WCHA hockey, he played on the 1973-74 US National Team. He was selected by New England in the 1973 WHA amateur draft, and began playing for the Whalers during the 1974-75 season. He was with them for the next four seasons, and played his first NHL game as a Hartford Whaler when his franchise joined the NHL in 1979-80. Thirty-seven games later he found himself in a Washington Capitols jersey. He demonstrated his versatility as a player while in Washington, as injuries to his teammates caused him to be moved from defence to forward and back again. Hangsleban was happiest at the blueline, considering himself a natural defenseman and handing out punishing body checks regularly. During the 1981-82 season, the Whalers sent him to the AHL, and Hangsleban signed as a free agent with the LA Kings, who were trying to plug holes in their injury plagued line-up. After 18 games in LA, it was back to the AHL, where he continued to play until 1984.
