Defenceman Val "Doc" Hoffinger was a stocky 5'6", 190lb. competitor who spent parts of two seasons with the Chicago Black Hawks in the late 20s.

Born in Seltz, Russia, Hoffinger immigrated with his family to Saskatchewan in his youth. After playing briefly with the senior Saskatoon Empires, he spent the 1926-27 season with the Saskatoon Sheiks of the Prairie League. The next year his split his playing time between the Hawks and the Sheiks. In 1928-29 he played a few games in Chicago but spent most of his time in the Can-Pro League with Hamilton and Kitchener.

Beginning with the 1929-30b season, the veteran rearguard played five consecutive years in the IAHL. He retired after stabilizing the defense corps on the AHA's Oklahoma City Warrior in 1934-35.
