Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Garry Howatt
Known as "Toy Tiger" during his days with the New York Islanders, Garry Howatt was like a bull terrier who'd take on any great dane or doberman in the league's kennel. Although he was small in size, he fought his way to 2,125 career penalty minutes.

While with the Islanders, Howatt was a third and fourth-line spark plug who helped his team to two of their four straight Stanley Cup victories before being traded to the Hartford Whalers in 1981. In New England, Howatt scored a career-high 50 points and was offered a long-term contract and the team's captaincy. But bad advice from some former teammates lead him to request a trade to New Jersey where, after squabbling with the team's management, he played only sporadically before ending his career with the Maine Mariners of the AHL.

"I'm not happy with what I accomplished in the NHL," he recounted, "because I felt that I could have played at least another three years? I should have listened to my wife. She was the one who said we shouldn't leave the Island when I did. And then she said we shouldn't leave Hartford when I did. So if I would have listened to her the first time, then who knows, I might have been with the Islanders, coaching or whatever. But it worked out for the best, and now -- my wife thinks she's the boss!"
