Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- John Hughes
Defenceman John Hughes played briefly with three NHL clubs in the 70s and 80s. He was an abrasive defender who could play the body and make efficient passes to his forwards.

Born in Charlottetown, PEI, Hughes was chosen 41st overall by the Vancouver Canucks after three years with the Toronto Marlboros. He began his pro career with the WHA's Phoenix Roadrunners in 1974-75 and ended up playing on four other teams before the league disbanded in 1979.

Following the NHL/WHA merger, Vancouver from the Edmonton Oilers reclaimed Hughes. He played solid defence and supplied grit in 52 games for the Canucks in 1979-80. Early the next season he was picked up on waivers by the Edmonton Oilers and played 18 games before being sent down to the minors. Late in the season the New York Rangers acquired him when they ran into injury problems on their blueline. Hughes played three playoffs games for the Blueshirts the spent the 1981-82 season with the AHL's Springfield Indians before retiring.
