Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Trevor Johansen
Defenceman Trevor Johansen combined tough play in his own end with an above average ability to move the puck forward. He lasted five NHL seasons with three different teams and was an experienced international player.

Born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Johansen starred with the local Twins of the TBJHL in 1973-74. He then moved on to help anchor the blueline of the OHA's Toronto Marlboros for three seasons and worked as a custodian at Maple Leaf Gardens. Considered one of the best two-way defenders in the league, Johansen was added to the St. Catharines Fincups squad that won a silver medal at the 1977 World Junior Championships. At the end of the season he was named to the OHA first-all-star team and, a few days later he was drafted in the first round, 12th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Johansen enjoyed a solid rookie season under coach Roger Neilson. His progress continued the next season before he was traded to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for sniper Paul Gardner. When Barry Beck was injured, Johansen joined Team Canada at the 1979 World Championships in Moscow. He scored with one minute left to eliminate Finland in the opening round and was picked the best Canadian defenceman.

Johansen was solid for the weak Rockies but he had to deal with two injured knees. He was claimed on waiver by the L.A. Kings in 1981 and lasted a few months before he was re-acquired by the Maple Leafs for the last month of the 1981-82 season. By this stage of his career he wore braces on both knees when he played but he was unable to turn to his right. Johansen retired in 1983 after injuries reduced him to six games played with the Springfield Indians of the AHL.
