Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Virgil Johnson
Virgil Johnson was a creative playmaking defenceman who spent parts of three NHL seasons with the Chicago Black Hawks in the 1930s and 40s. He was best known as a stalwart in the AHA as well as a successful USHL player.

Born in Minneapolis, Johnson started with hometown Millers of CHL in 1932-33. He next moved on to the St. Paul Saints of CHL and remained with the team for another five and a half seasons when they joined AHA. In 1937-38 he scored a goal during a 25-game recall to the Chicago Black Hawks and played ten playoff contests when the franchise won its second Stanley Cup. Apart from this stint, Johnson was a fixture on the Saints defence and was named to AHA first all-star team in 1942.

After playing the 1942-43 schedule with the Hershey Bears of the AHL he rejoined the Hawks. Nearly six years after he first suited up the NHL he played all 48 games for Chicago in 1943-44. The veteran rearguard played just two games with Chicago the next season before he was sent back to AHL with Cleveland Barons. He then rejoined the Minneapolis Millers who were now playing in the USHL. Johnson anchored their blueline for two years before taking a three-year hiatus from the game.

He returned in 1950-51 and played two years in the All-American Hockey League with the Minneapolis Jerseys and the Saint Paul Saints before retiring. One of the longest serving American players of his time, Johnson's contribution was recognized when he was elected to the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.
