Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Jay Johnston
Jay Johnston was a hard-hitting defenceman who joined the Washington Capitals for eight games in the early 1980s. He played a physical role on the blueline in junior and found a niche for himself in the minor leagues for several years.

The native of Hamilton, Ontario played with the hometown junior Tigers before moving up to the OHA with the St. Catharines Fincups. Johnston remained with the team when it played out of Hamilton the next year. After that season the Washington Capitals chose him 45th overall in the NHL Amateur Draft.

Johnston impressed in his first pro season with the IHL's Port Huron Flags by scoring 24 points and intimidating forwards on the opposition. The Caps moved him up to their top farm club in Hershey the next season. Johnston was recalled for a pair of games in 1980-81 and six games the following year but was unable to rise above farmhand status. He continued to play with the Hershey Bears for three more years then played the same duration with the IHL's Fort Wayne Komets before retiring in 1987.
