Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- John Keating
Left-winger John Richard Keating played 35 games for the New York Americans in the early 1930s. He was better known for being a consistent performer in the minors and senior leagues. Keating was admired for his ability to assess the strengths and weaknesses of his opponents and make the necessary adjustments, a trait that also helped him as a coach.

Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Keating first played with the Chatham Ironmen in 1925-26. He then moved into the senior ranks in his hometown to play with the Fusiliers and Beavers. In October 1930 he was signed as a free agent by the Americans and joined the New Haven Eagles of the CanAm League. While playing three years for the Eagles, Keating was called up for 25 games in 1931-32 and 13 matches the next year.

Following his brief time in the NHL, Keating excelled in the minors, particularly with the AHL's Providence Reds from 1934 to 1939. He later played for the league's Syracuse Stars and Buffalo Bisons as well as the St. Paul Saints of the AHA. In 1941-42, Keating returned to his native province to play senior hockey in Saint John with the Beavers and Garrison before retiring in 1947. After hanging up his skates, Keating became a successful coach with the Beavers for several years.
