Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Bob Kelly
|
Bob 'Battleship' Kelly was born June 6, 1946 in what was then known as Fort William; now Thunder Bay, Ontario. After starring locally, the big leftwinger was drafted by the Torono Maple Leafs with their first selection in the 1967 Amateur Draft. After bouncing through the IHL, CHL and AHL, and being part of both the Leafs' and Rangers' organizations, Kelly was traded to St. Louis prior to the 1973-74 season. After starting the season with the Blues, Battleship was traded to Pittsburgh in January 1974 along with Ab DeMarco Jr. and Steve Durbano, with the Blues receiving Bryan Watson, Greg Polis and a draft choice in return. It was as a Penguin that Kelly made his NHL mark. In 1974-75, his first full season in Pittsburgh, Battleship Bob Kelly scored 27 goals, collecting 25 the following season. After the 1976-77 season, Kelly was cut loose, and signed with the Chicago Black Hawks as a free agent. He played two seasons with the Hawks, before finishing his professionl hockey career with a handful of games in the minors.
