After bouncing through the IHL, CHL and AHL, and being part of both the Leafs' and Rangers' organizations, Kelly was traded to St. Louis prior to the 1973-74 season. After starting the season with the Blues, Battleship was traded to Pittsburgh in January 1974 along with Ab DeMarco Jr. and Steve Durbano, with the Blues receiving Bryan Watson, Greg Polis and a draft choice in return. It was as a Penguin that Kelly made his NHL mark. In 1974-75, his first full season in Pittsburgh, Battleship Bob Kelly scored 27 goals, collecting 25 the following season. After the 1976-77 season, Kelly was cut loose, and signed with the Chicago Black Hawks as a free agent.
