Kuntz began his career at Ottawa Glebe Collegiate High school in 1935 at the age of 16. The following season (1936-37) he played in the Ontario Central Junior Hockey League (OCJHL) for four games, scoring two goals and an assist. For the next four years he played on four different teams (Ottawa Glebe Collegiate, Guelph Indians, Washington Eagles and Philadelphia Rockets) before playing in the NHL.

During the 1941-42 season, Kuntz played for the New York Rangers scoring 10 goals and had 11 assists in 31 games and also played in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the New Haven Eagles scoring five goals and nine assists in 21 games. For the next two seasons, he bounced around on three more teams in three different leagues before making a return in 1945-46 to the NHL and the New York Rangers for part of a season. Alan had one assist in 14 games before going to the St. Paul Saints of the USHL.

He went on to play in the AHL for another two seasons with the New Haven Ramblers (1946-47) and in August 1948 he was traded by the Rangers to the Springfield Indians for $5,000. On August 20th, 1948 Kuntz was traded again, this time to the Vancouver Canucks of the PCHL for cash. He played with Vancouver during the 1948-49 and the 1949-50 season and he was on the Northern Second All-Star Team in 1949.

From 1950 until the end of the 1953 season, he played for the Ottawa Senators of the QHML and in 1952 was named to the First All-Star Team. He bounced from different teams and leagues again, playing on the Ottawa Senators of the QHL during the 1953-54 season and part of the 1954-55 season before going to the Pembroke Lumber Kings of the NOHA. His last year of hockey was played during the 1955-56 season with the Brockville Magedomas of the EOHL.
