Dick Lamby was born on May 3, 1955 in Auburn Massachusetts. He began his career during the 1974-75 season with the Salem State University and was on the East All-American team during 1974 and 1975. Just one year later he would represent the USA on both the National (1975) and the Olympics (1976) teams. In 1975, during the Amateur draft, Lamby was the St. Louis Blues 7th choice. From 1976-78 Lamby played for Boston University and in 1977-78 played for the USA of the WEC-A. Also while at Boston Lamby was Second Team All New England and had the third highest point total on the varsity squad.

During the 1978-79 season Lamby played with the St. Louis Blues (NHL) for nine games, recording four points before going to the Salt Lake Eagles of the CHL. In the next two seasons (1979/80, 1980/81) Lamby had brief stints with the team playing a total of 13 games and getting one assist. Between the thirteen games in the NHL he would continue to play in Salt Lake with the Eagles.
