Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Jiri Latal
Defenseman Jiri Latal played parts of three seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers in the 80s and 90s. He was a fine playmaker but was not accustomed to rougher North American style of play.

Born in Olomouc, Czechoslovakia, Latal was drafted 106th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1985 when he was an up-and-coming youngster with Sparta Prague. He played three years on Sparta then spent two on Dukla Trencin. On the international stage, Latal made the European Junior Championship all-star team in 1984 after helping his country win the silver medal. He also played for Czechoslovakia at three straight World Junior Championships beginning in 1985 and won two more silver medals. The gifted blueliner was also named to the tournament all-star squad in 1987.

After playing one game for Czechoslovkia at the 1989 World Championships, Latal's rights were traded to the Philadelphia Flyers. He decided to try his luck in the NHL that year and scored 19 points in 32 games for Philly. He also gained some valuable playing time on the Hershey Bears of the AHL. Latal played 50 games on the rebuilding Flyers in 1990-91 but his defensive play was erratic at times. He played very little in 1991-92 before he opted to return to Europe. Latal played two years with Norway's VF Oslo the suited up briefly for Olomouc before retiring early in the 1994-95 season.
