Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Jim Leavins
Defenceman Jim Leavins was a part time player for the Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers in the 80s. He excelled at passing the puck and playing the point on the power play but also covered his position in the defensive zone fairly well.

Born in Dinsmore, Saskatchewan Leavins spent four years at the University of Denver where he accumulated 147 points. He was named to the WCHA first all-star team in 1984 then joined the IHL's Fort Wayne Komets as a free agent the next season. After helping the Komets finish second in the West Division standings, Leavins came to terms with the Red Wings.

The solid rearguard split the 1985-86 season between Motown and the AHL's Adirondack Red Wings. He scored 13 points in 37 games but struggled defensively and was a -23. In the off-season he was part of trade with the New York Rangers that was framed around Glen Hanlon and Kelly Kisio. Leavins played most of the 1986-87 season in the minors and dressed for four contests in New York. He then spent most of two years in the minors and was named to the IHL second all-star teaming 1988 after registering 57 points for the Salt Lake Golden Eagles. Leavins later spent time with the Canadian national team and suited up in Finland, Sweden and Italy before retiring in 1993.
